The Encryption Altercation

Once again we have arrived at a crossroads and we need your input.

Here is the scenario:
FreeCSScart allows for the ability to sell digital goods, like photos, software, subscriptions, etc. But the problem lies in how we allow the purchaser of the product to activate it. Herein lies our problem; universal yet unique encryption algorithms. Every store needs the ability to customize the order and the uniqueness of their product encryption.

Example:
A store sells an amazing “flash menu”. It is a digital good. They require that each purchaser of the product get a unique product key that allows it only to be used on a specific domain and that only that product can be used there. Thus, they need an encryption that includes:

  • Date and Time
  • Product ID
  • User ID
  • Custom Field (Url or any other unique specific information)

Now all this information needs to be sorted scrambled and encrypted and then decrypted by flash so that it can read the product key.

The Question:
What encryption method would you prefer?
This question goes out to all the people that will be using the “sell digital goods” side of freeCSScart. You are going to have to create the decryption for your product keys inside of your products. Here are our options:

  • SHA-2
  • RC4
  • AES
  • Simple ASCII Encryption (Made by freeCSScart)
  • (Your Suggestions Here)

Once this product key is encrypted, it would also need to be decrypted, which leaves us with only injective encryption processes (So not MD5).

We would like you to add your input. Please just use the comments field below (If no comment field exists, please click on the title of this post).

    Is there a pulse?

The product is still under development and will be made available.

We apologize for the lack of communication and we hope to have more information for you in the near future. Thanks for your patience.

Well, someone is at least monitoring, editing, and removing comments. That’s something, I guess. I just wish the developers would either shut this site down completely or give us any information at all. Anything. Did you write a line of code this week? Great, LET US KNOW! Frankly, it’s rude to keep this site up to gather Google search hits if a “free CSS cart” will never actually be made available.

Please let everyone know. How much would it cost to get this thing to hurry up. Do you want us to all invest 5 bucks?? Let us know where you are at?

Has this project died? Can someone let us know?
    :)

Yes, some screenshots would be good - if only to show that this project is actually under development.

When can we see some progress in screenshot form? This project has always intrigued me, but progress seems to have really slowed down. I know that there will be a lot of behind the scenes goings on, and I’m not asking for a release date. Just some more info on actual progress.

This system sounds cool, can’t wait to test it…

you need any skinning, let me know.

Im really stoked for the release

  11. Gregg March 22nd, 2007

    encryption or encyption?

but honestly i would go with SHA-2.

  12. anon March 11th, 2007

but how can we hack it if we dont even know where is it?
    or how it looks like?

  13. jjmancini March 8th, 2007

anon - We got rid of the forum for personal reasons.

derek - We got in touch with Shaun Inman and they do not use any kind of standard encyption for mint.

We went ahead and started to use RSA. We will post soon to see if anyone can hack it!

  14. Aaron March 7th, 2007

    SHA-2

  15. anon March 6th, 2007

    mmm where is the forum?

  16. Chuz March 3rd, 2007

    SHA-2…..

    …I guess.

  17. derek February 27th, 2007

I’m not too sure about which specific algorithm you should use, however you could always try getting in touch with Shaun Inman and see what his method for authenticating Mint sales are.

You guys are taking some good steps! Can\’t wait until it is released.

  19. anon February 25th, 2007

    screenshots would be good.
    please give us some screenshots.

    keep it up. thx!

  20. Otto February 24th, 2007

I’d SHA-2, as I know it has strong security. :)

  21. DJ-Night February 24th, 2007

SHA-2 because the most secured one :-)

I’d vote AES, because it’s pretty common.

Please please please don’t use anything proprietary.
